Stafon Johnson injured in weightlifting accident

Stafon Johnson, a USC running back, injured himself in the weight room today, in what appears to have been a freak accident. He lost control of the bar and it landed on his neck. Witnesses said he was spitting up blood and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, and is in surgery.

Los Angeles Times report that he was lifting weights this morning, then lost control of the bar, which then landed on his neck. USC’s strength and conditioning coach, Chris Carlisle, said that this type of accident is rare. “I’ve seen players have the bar slip and fall onto their chest, but never in my 25 years of coaching have I heard of someone dropping a bar on their throat,” the coach said.

Chris Carlisle was within a few feet of Stafon when the incident occurred,and that there was an assistant strength and conditioning coach acting as the “spotter” for him.

Coach Pete Carroll said that this was an unfortunate accident, and stated that, “our thoughts and prayers are with Stafon.”

Stafon Johnson is currently leading the USC with five touchdowns this year. He is also the team’s 2nd leading rusher with 157 yards in 32 carries.
